I had a really great experience getting to know my student and communicating with him the best ways we could learn reading together. There were frustrating moments when I could not think of a way to help him understand certain grammatical rules, but the whole experience was a learning process, and I think I learned a lot more from him than he did from me. I don't usually have the opportunity to speak to younger kids in an academic setting, so talking with my student 1:1 really gave me a lot of joy and pride for the progress we made in his reading.

4 out of 10 students can't read this sentence.

But you can help. Closing this achievement gap begins with your support. When we teach kids to read, they don't just get to enjoy Harry Potter. They start to do better in math and science as well. They graduate from high school more frequently. They're able to read the application for that job they want. They gain confidence and dignity. They learn about the world about them. And they get to be a part of changing that world for the better.
