Please describe your student and why you qualify for tutoring.
Maria is almost 15 and has always struggled in the traditional school environment. She was diagnosed with ADD when she was in sixth grade at age 11. She tried medication, but it was unsuccessful. Her struggles in school got worse as middle school went on, and became unmanageable once she got to high school. For this reason, we pulled her out of school last month and began homeschooling. It has been going well, and she is enjoying learning again, but math is an area where I am not really able to help her. She has always been very bright, but has never really done well in regular classroom environment, and math has always been her weakest subject. She is very bubbly and friendly and extremely outgoing. She has four younger siblings; two sisters ages 11 1/2 and 18 months, and two brothers ages 8 1/2 and 5 1/2. Although she is homeschooled, she is still required to learn math, and will need to take a standardized test for it at the end of the school year.
What are your greatest hopes for your student?
I know that Maria can learn math if she has the right teacher. She needs someone who is patient enough to guide her through her learning and be willing to explain things as many times as she needs it to learn a given concept. I would love for her to see that she can succeed at anything that she works hard enough at, even things that are difficult for her. This will give her the confidence that she will need to succeed in many areas throughout her life.
What are you most grateful for?
I am most grateful for the things that my children have taught me about different learning styles, about strengths and weaknesses and what we can learn from these about ourselves. I am also grateful to be in a position where I am able to homeschool my daughter, teach her in the way that best reaches her, and help her to rediscover her love of learning.
Please describe specifically what your student needs help with.
Maria needs assistance in geometry. She feels that she understands distance and midpoint, but nothing else, really.
